2013 vs. 2014 – What does the changing pattern in Google Search Trends indicate?

Google gets over 38,000 search queries per minute. Annually, billions of searches originate from India, what can one learn from the top charts comprised based on what 300 million online Indian searched?

Here are the essentials of 2014: Most ‘Trending’ search terms, Most ‘Searched’ term, and Most searched ‘People’ compared with the trends of 2013.

google-india-search trends-2013-vs-2014

A quick glance tell us that IRCTC is the most searched term for both 2014 & 2013, What does this mean? A ‘search’ can be classified into 3 categories, they are ‘know’ (look for information), ‘do’ (an action, like download) and ‘go’ (visit a URL). Since IRCTC is household name, its safe to assume that people searched with ‘go’ intent to visit the URL; but were comfortable searching for it and then clicking the link from Google’s search results than typing the URL directly. Same goes for SBI Online and HDFC Netbanking, Perhaps no one wants to type in a wrong URL and pay a price by being victim of phishing! So, these brands are definitely on top of Indian minds, its just URLs that are not.

For a marketer, this also means that people are now transacting online and increasingly using online banking, this is a huge and positive change that indicates the reduced level of skepticism in opening up their wallets online.

Its good to see Flipkart and Snapdeal on top, this year has been great for Indian ecommerce industry. While Flipkart & OLX made it to the top list last year too, its Snapdeal that’s new.

In terms of most trending keywords, Election beats everything, thanks to a involved nation. FIFA triumphed over IPL.

The debut of a high ranking iPhone6 indicates how obsessed we are with new gadgets or is it its large screen? last year we had Samsung S4 in top searched phone category, while for this year it is a humble Moto G that has topped the chart.

Sunny Leone reigns supremacy as the most searched person. Poonam Pandey has moved up a rung in the popular people ladder, voyeurism wont fade, so does the maxim ‘skin sells’

Its entertainment, entertainment, entertainment

With 4 movies and 7 film stars across the lists, Lets cite Vidya Balan’s from Dirty Picture here. Its entertainment all the way and it gets accentuated on the internet pretty deeply. If you compare the Indian trends to Worldwide trends, then Jennifer Lawrence, Kim Kardashian & Julie Gayet are the top 3 people searched for. The web is what you make of it, for many people, its for entertaining them, whether through cat pictures or film starts, the theme remains.

What can we infer from ‘Google Translate‘ being on the top chart? Lets not disregard the fact that in India, English is not the only language. Because someone has access to internet doesnt mean they are comfortable in English. (vernacular newspaper have an estimated reach of 438 million Vs. 40 million reach of English newspaper). It is also interesting to note that Govt of India is likely to collaborate with Google for integrating Indian Languages Virtual Keyboard on Android soon. Brands that can embrace this will have significant amount of new customers coming their way.

Virat Kohli is the only sports person in the list (phew), and Honey Singh is no longer searched for (sigh).

SSC is out of list, maybe people now want job in startups?

And finally, our PM, NaMo makes his mark twice across the lists, once in trending & once in people; but only to trail behind Sunny.

Lets hope for a a great 2015!

Notes from Prashant Mehta, VC at Lightbox Venture

Startup capital is a tricky area for many entrepreneurs, hence we organized a session called – Bootstrapping vs. Fundraising – When & How.

Prashant Mehta, VC, Lightbox Ventures, GBG Mumbai

Here are the notable points from our speaker Prashant Mehta, who is a Venture Capitalist at Lightbox Ventures.

Do read and share with fellow entrepreneurs.

  • Bootstrap and show us the money and we will give you more.

  • Bootstrapping shows confidence the entrepreneur has on his/her venture.

  • At Lightbox, we give 80% weightage to decide to fund or not based on team(s).

  • A team should have ability to attract similar or more talented people than they are.

  • We consider to fund service business if they can show the growth potential without necessarily growing the number of people/resources. i.e if a service business can grow 10x by increasing resource by just 2x, that’s great model.

  • Take tough decisions first and take it deep.

  • Building a right culture is extremely critical, having a DNA and looking for talent with right DNA is imperative.

  • Scaling is a very broad term, just hiring more people does not amount to scaling.

  • Technology and infrastructure such as cloud computing, servers, open source languages, etc are now so much more affordable and makes it easy and cheap to bootstrap.

  • Its OK to think about exit, but do not talk about it to a VC while asking for funds.

  • Last mile delivery is a challenge area in India, if this can be addressed, then a significant positive impact will accrue.

  • If two different teams approach them with similar ideas; the brighter team will be considered for funding.

  • Tech startups requiring funding in India are not assessed the same way like US. This is because of cultural factors like ‘how one takes risk and handles failure’

  • In the Indian Geography, Execution of Ideas/Innovation has relatively more importance than Innovation!

  • If a VC asks ‘why do you need funding? It is completely Ok to say ‘we aim to create wealth for all stakeholder’

  • Level 2 and 3 are very important resources in building a great company, they have to be treated well and given options like ESOP to make them wealthy when startup exits.

Event: Bootstrapping vs. Fundraising – When and How – Nov29th.

Read the notes from the meeting here gbgmumbai.org/vc-notes/

The world is full of ideas, everyone of us have a profound knowledge of something in our own field of work and an idea follows immediately to make it better. But then, Ideas are dime a dozen, the challenge is in execution. Of the many challenges that hinders executing a world changing idea is access to resources (aka money).

To take the plunge and getting things done is not everyone’s cup of tea, thankfully there are Angels (Friends, Family) who take the leap of faith along with a wannabe  entrepreneur to setup shop and grow the startup.

We wish it was that easy! Well, consider this scenarios:

  • Can your competitors take over the market if they raise capital and you bootstrap?
  • Can your business continue growing without external funding?
  • What are your chances for successful fundraising? or should you even try?
  • You may need the VCs, but does VCs need you?

If answering these questions was not hard enough, there are more jargons in the world of fundraising, Pre-Money, Post-Money, Rights of capital protection, Political rights, Liquidation preferences…does this mean one must give up hopes and resort to just bootstrapping?

Let us remember, ‘raising capital is not equal to success, not raising is not equal to failure’. Whether bootstrapped or funded, the money is just a means to an end. But how does one decide what to do and how to go about?

GBG Mumbai brings you an exclusive session – ‘Bootstrapping vs. Fundraising – When and How‘ where you can hear two perspective on the same topic; one from a Venture Capitalist, another from an Entrepreneur who recently raised funds.

Speaker Profile:

  • Prashanth Mehta, Partner, Lightbox Venture (Lightbox’s portfolio includes InMobi, Cleartrip, Naukri)
  • Prateek Shukla, Co-founder / CEO, grabhouse.com (the startup that gives you broker free house renting)

Date & Time: Saturday, Nov 29th. 3.45pm. Seminar Hall, Harkisan Mehta Institute of Journalism. Mithibai College. Vile Parle.

Entry: Free and by registration only. Please fill the form below and await your confirmation.

Who should attend? If you are a startup or intending to start one in the near future, and would like to know how to the nuances of bootstrapping and raising money, then this event is for you.

Event: User Experience (UX) & Its Impact on Business – Nov 15th

Spork

Technically, a Spork is supposed to provide best of both – a spoon and a fork, but it neither provides the simplicity of a spoon nor the utility of a fork to eat complex food. No matter how nice the design is, or of what material (steel, plastic, gold!) it is made up of, the spork is an epitome of bad user experience in the world of dining experiences.

The need for a good user experience (UX) is a need than a want. A good design (UI) does not necessarily qualify as good UX. The challenge to provide a great UX for your customer only intensifies in digital side of your business where a human interacts with a machine, and no two user may have similar technical savviness to browse through a labyrinth and arrive at what content / product they were looking for in your website / app.

Think of two big giants in digital buisness – Google and Amazon, both are known for their simplicity in UX; think of Search, Gmail, YouTube…or finding a book on Amazon. All of it looks just ok from a design stand point of view, but have you ever found it difficult to use any of these services? Certainly not! that’s the beauty of having a great UX.

A great UX is not seen, but it is subconsciously felt and experienced by an user on your site or app, it is what increases usability and loyalty towards your business in general.

Whether or not apps and websites are at the center of your business, We are sure there’s a digital element to every business. Today, UX is a must-know area for an entrepreneur to succeed in business by increasing usability and enhancing user’s experience to garner loyalty. Here’s a great chance for you to learn more from the experts.

Topic: User Experience (UX) & Its Impact on Business

  • Sreeraman, Chapter Manager, GBG Mumbai: Keynote address
  • Ajay Menon, COO, Zoomin.com: Impact of Design on Startups

Android-5.0-Lollipop-gbg-mumbai-sreeraman-review

Review: All about Android Lollipop

Google’s latest Android operating system ‘Lollipop’ is being rolled out today to an array of devices including Nexus and Motorola. Google I/O 2014 saw Google’s SVP of Android and Chrome, Sundar Pichai, announcing the Android L (now named as Lollipop) along with ‘Material design’ and the launch of 5000 APIs for developers.

Now that we are finally ready for the sweat treat of Lollipop, lets see what it has in store for us that makes life indeed better.

  • Great UI: Material Design is brilliant interface through fluid tactile surfaces, bold graphic design, fluid motion, if this sounds too jargonish, just think of Material Design as a digital version of paper & pen, that’s how real it gets.
  • Try this sample game to experience the difference.
Android Lollipop - Material Design
Material Design in action
  • Material Design focuses on the fundamentals of good graphic design, using strong colors and bold typography to create clear hierarchy and focus attention on content, so reading and using your device running Lollipop is going to be more engaging experience.
  • Continuity on multiscreen: You can now pick up tasks from where you left off across Android devices! Songs, photos, search..can be immediately accessed from another device running Android.
  • Multiple Device Compatibility: Android Lollipop is built to work across not just mobile and tablets, but across Car, Wear, TV. It has been designed just for you, based on what you need and when you need an information with the right context.
Android Powers Multiple screen, including a Car!
Android Powers Multiple screen, including a Car!

  • Better Camera functions: Lollipop makes way to support camera features like burst mode and fine settings tuning. it will also enable options to capture full resolution frames (30fps) and shoot in raw formats like YUV and Bayer RAW.
  • Better Battery: The announcement of Project Volta during I/O 14 paved way for developers to be more cognizant of how apps drain battery, this obviously has lead to Lollipop promising better battery life. Plus, the new runtime called ART is also meant to make the devices more efficient, faster and still conserve battery.
  • Improved Security and guest mode: No more worrying of someone swiping your picture gallery and ‘accidentally’ seeing your personal clicks. Lollipop has guest mode that takes care of this problem, besides, there’s Android Smart Lock to secure your phone or tablet by pairing it with a trusted device like your wearable or car. Google has enforced the SELinux security module for all apps to give better protection against vulnerabilities and malware.
  • Notification reimagined: This is really convenient, now you can view and respond to messages directly from lock screen, choose to hide notifications for private or sensitive content. Notification control has very advanced options for avoiding interruptions while playing games or watching a video!
Enhanced notifications with better control - Android lollipop
Enhanced notifications with better control
  • Better use of NFC: If you are switching / upgrading between Android devices such as phones or tablets, then the NFC lets you tap and setup your new devices instantly including apps from your Google Play.
  • All your favorite apps, now with a great new look: The Wall Street Journal, Tumblr and BuzzFeed have already upgraded to material design. Its only a matter of time until all of the apps move to the new design format.
Apps on Material Design
  • Google’s own apps reimagined: Email goes ‘inbox’, Calendar gets material design, Gmail 5.0, Google Fit, many more to come. The rise of Android and the introduction of Material Design is making our life seamless and has added more purpose to having multiple connected devices.

So what are you waiting for? Let the world’s most favorite operating system delight you. Check for an upgrade on your phone now!

A Happy & Sweet Lollipop to you!
