Google Day X, Google Day

What I overheard about Google Day in Mumbai?

Mr. K was standing in the jam-packed auditorium along with Mr. Y, looking in all directions.

Mr. Y was even almost behaving as Mr. K. In addition he was checking the ceilings too.

Mr. K checked weather they had arrived at the right place. (Yes they were at the right place) Mr. K and Mr. Y were puzzled seeing the charged up atmosphere. There were people from all ages, professions and ethnicities. He was puzzled as to what to do next. His witty senses advised him to go and find the man in charge of all of this. So both of them went around searching for Sreeraman Thiagarajan. The person appointed as manager for GBG Mumbai chapter. This is where their journey of GDayX began.

Seeing their lost and puzzled faces Sreeraman extended his hand forward and said,

“Hello, how may I help you?

Mr. K introduced himself as an aspiring entrepreneur. Sreeraman turned towards Mr. Y with a look of knowing about him Mr. Y shot his first question

”Sreeraman tell me why is this GDayX held?”

Sreeraman replied courteously,

“In a country like India, there are millions of people who are using Internet as well as millions of people who are discovering its potential. Internet has become a phenomenon, which can’t be ignored. Google all throughout this while came with technologies due to which it almost became synonymous with Internet. These technologies can help both engineers and businessmen in their respective endeavors. People need to be educated about these technologies. So keeping that in mind GDayX has been organized in Mumbai”.

Satisfied by this answer Y got ready to ask another question when he was interrupted by U

“Come on man! Lets give our host also some moments to speak. You are curious 24*7!”

Releasing what K said was true, Y kept quiet.

In the mean while a three-man entourage was formed. Mr. U got chatty with Sreeraman. He asked,

“ How did you fellas know about this event?”

Both of them replied

“Internet”

Seeing their mini choir Mr. Manager smiled

Now it was K’z turn. He started

”Sree is it okay if I call you Mr. M?”

“Oh is it like the all controlling M of Bond series?”. All the three of them shared a moment of unity.

(From here on Sreeraman will be encoded as M.)

“M, back when I was visiting a small remote town” continued K. “I came across a 9 year old boy who was very passionately asking questions about Google and Facebook. The level of information this boy had was marvelous. Upon inquiring further, I knew that most of his friends were as passionate as that boy. That whole evening I spent talking to these boys. This particular incident made me realize that in the future if businesses had to survive in the real world it was imperative to have a virtual presence.”

Y as curious as ever shot his next question

” So K do you mean that it is necessary to have virtual presence to inform or to conduct business?”

To this M replied

“Starting a business online, requires support from many different sources. You need a web developer, designer, SEO specialist, internet marketing, etc. Once you establish your business online you can expand your presence, because Internet help you to bring the whole world at your feet. The chances of gaining traction high are very high in this case….”

Before M would finish U interrupted him

“This is wonderful. It won’t matter where my business is located for I can foresee a future in which the world will completely rely on Internet. I can cutoff the middlemen. Supply directly to my customers. God this is so exciting!”

“Yes, the day of virtual reality is not very far my friend. While organizing GDayX this is what the whole team was dreaming of.”

Replied M.

Y again started packing his curious cats

“But M, don’t you think when we say the world will soon be dependent on virtual reality, not only businesses but even online communities, supports groups, free schools, etc. and all the elements of the physical world will be incorporated into Internet?“

“Yes. It is very true” replied M.

“So I am kind of worried how will the whole system work?

Is it ready for it? If it is not ready, what is the immediate thing that we can do to bring virtual reality one step closer?’

As Y had finished this question three of then were standing near the door of the auditorium.

Guesing what is on M’s mind, K said,

“Oh I so get it now! Y my friend we are the right place! I am sure you will find all your answers inside that door.”

M gave both of them a wise smile and opened the door. All of them entered the auditorium

“Of all th things you have asked I can tell you one thing. Even if that 9 year old kid form that small sleepy town enters this room, he will leave either as an aspiring entrepreneur or an inquisitive developer! This is what GDayX aims to do”

Yes to all the Mr K and Mr Y.

(Mr. K being the ever-understanding entrepreneurs and Mr. Y being the ever-curious developers) GDayX Mumbai is the place for you. This is the place where learning, networking and discussing will thrill as much as any bike stunt would do. This is a place where you form your own question and be sure that you will not leave without an answer. As of today any person who uses Google has become a part of worldwide community. This is community, which fosters an innovative spirit and a curious outlook amongst its members. This community is ready to learn and implement new things. Constantly involved in making ground breaking discoveries and creating new standards. Have the right questions and discover a whole new world at your feet.

How I felt after attending GBG Mumbai’s Workshop

Hi All!

Though I will share my experiences from the workshop..read on and let us know your thoughts as comments

On 31st August Google Business Group (GBG), Mumbai chapter organized a workshop on the topic ‘What gets measured, gets managed’, it was held at GBG Mumbai’s strategic partner venue – HMFIJ.

The speakers included Redcom’s Pareen Lathia and Vibhas Sen from Virtual Snipers. The organizing committee members are Rushabh Vasa, Manan Shah, Kaushal Raj, and Hardik Shah, who are the core members of GBG Mumbai.

Following is the description of the seminar held.

These words are coming from the mind of the person who was basically about to sleep (seats seemed softer and relaxing after a rough day), but instead went on listening.
What was it that I decided not to sleep? Was there something so important? So hear the tales of what actually kept me excited all throughout.

The seminar was hallowed with good number of participants. I had never foreseen that the crowd would be so active. All the credit should go to the organizers of the event for their fabulous hospitality. They fed us, encouraged us and sheltered us from the college commotion outside. No jokes. This was actually what they did. At around 4:50 all the participants were given some snacks, giving them some time to network with all the other attendees. The free snacks consisted of sandwiches of two types and hot beverages of two types. The attendees, whom turned up were hungry and arranging the snacks was a relishing and refreshing decision.

Before we entered into the seminar hall, all the groundwork was organized properly. The projector was set, the sound was set, laptops; on and connected, projector; up and running efficiently and the crowd enthusiastic. The organizers then smartly maneuvered everyone slowly into the seminar hall; where it all began.

The seminar started with an introductory presentation from a tall guy with a loud voice. He was interacting very easily with the attendees. I soon learnt that the guy speaking is the manager of Mumbai Chapter for Google Business Group, Sreeraman Thiagarajan. Sreeraman encouraged all of us to give a short professional/personal introduction about them. Now these 30 seconds of fame worked out some magic, as it was mandatory for everyone to speak something about himself or herself also keeping in mind, that your voice should also be audible to everyone. So some were enthusiastically introducing while some appeared a bit nervous during the introduction. Most of the people turned out to be internet entrepreneurs, web developers, app developers, etc.

Before the commencement of the program an elderly gentleman seated next to me quoted a slogans from one of the KBC ad campaigns “ Dekho bhai ‘Seekhna bandh toh Jeetna Bandh’ hum toh yah seekhne ke liye aaye hay’. The gentleman was true. You should keep learning as it engages your mental faculties and channelizes our energy into thinking and execution. Sadly the gentleman found me not so interesting .So he changed his seats and sat beside a man of his own age (networking huh!!!).

Sreeraman explained to us about the background of Google Business Group. The last seminar was held at National Stock Exchange with the sole aim of empowering women entrepreneurs. Sreeraman went ahead and explained the basic difference between GDG, GSA and GBG. He also introduced the central theme of the seminar. This keynote from Sreeraman very well served as a show starter, in essence, he outlined the need for measuring, a case in point is that ‘we often make poor business decision not because of lack of alternatives, but due to lack of clear insights’ he added & concluded how Google’s tools can help you measure and gain insights for taking business decisions, after which Pareen Lathia started with his part, ‘The Workshop’

Pareen is a tall & young guy, who can be easily mistaken for a college graduate; the subject was ‘Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tool’. In my views these concepts always scared the wits out of me, the same way Physics did in Junior College. I always considered these tools as a thing far from the understanding of a mortal man! So Pareen walks up to the mike, introduces him respectfully and then starts with the workshop. It was this moment, when I thought I would get bored, but here comes the first joke from Pareen. The whole seminar busted into giggles and laughter, that was, because the jokes were anecdotes from business life. Pareen carried forward explaining each concept into minute details also giving a practical example of each concept. Pareen Lathia is the Founder and CEO of Redcom. He explained to all of us the nitty-gritties of the Internet industry, how clients behave, how do people work, etc. With the help of the presentation the speaker wonderfully explained concepts like visit, unique visitors, pages per visits, bounce rates, A/B testing, etc. With Pareen speaking, Google Analytics seemed like a child’s play.

Complete understanding of Google Analytics can help you measure the effectiveness of your internet assets and help take better business decisions. The attendees were interacting with the speaker frequently asking him an array of questions about the concepts Pareen was explaining. All the numbers and the graph mentioned on the dashboard made much more sense when Pareen told everyone how they are linked and the correct way of analyzing them. Pareen helped us to understand better by giving live demonstrations. This demo helped me to gain a firsthand knowledge of how Google Analytics work. Pareen had so many concepts to cover but had very little time. So he had to wrap up his part to hand over the rest of the session to Vibhas Sen.

Sampath Igyengar, a seasoned entrepreneur who also runs JamwithSam, was the man behind lens; he truly has the power to capture moments in time.

Vibhas Sen is founding member at Virtual Snipers. Vibhas is a man who is aiming for National Paralympic Swimmer; Vibhas displayed a rich store of practical knowledge about the synergy between Google Analytics & Google Adwords. Vibhas directly turned towards the applicatory part of Adwords after giving an overview of the same. There were many questions in the minds of the participants, which they openly debated with him. Vibhas skillfully handled the wide variety of questions. Some of them were very tricky. Even the participants were sharing their bit of information with other fellow participants and other delegates. Vibhas acted like an inspiration to me. One can keep your body in crutches but not your mind

Towards the end the participants were very actively debating with the speakers. After answering a few question, Vibahs handed over the proceedings back to Sreeraman. While most of were still basking in the knowledge seized from this event, an eminent revelation was made. It was about GdayX at Mumbai. This event is a daylong event co-created and organized by GDG & GBG.

Signing off, he requested people to fill up the feedback form, which will aid in improving this community. He promised the presentation deck will be shared with all attendees. Later, all the attendees and the participants were invited for a group photo. When I left the hall, people were networking with the delegates, core members, fellow participants feeling satisfied for the knowledge they had gained. Overall a top-notch job executed by the GBG Mumbai, see you all at GdayX. Three Cheers for the Fellas!

What gets measured, gets managed – Workshop on Google Webmasters and Analytics tool

“What Gets Measured, Gets Managed” Peter Drucker

Imagine, on an average day, how many things do one track, measure and quantify? Be it your fuel gauge in car, pedometer in your exercise routine, or a humble timer in the microwave oven; all of these are ‘tools’ that merely lets you measure ‘what’s going on’ and enables you to take actions as needed – fill adequate fuel, walk at a faster pace to burn required calories, or inspect if the food is cooked or not.

The ever changing internet has altered the business scenario for all of us, consider a small and a giant e-commerce store selling similar products, it is imperative for both of them to get a first hand sense of ‘who’ is visiting their stores, ‘what’ are they looking at? At ‘which’ point are they leaving the store? ‘How’ much time spent is good enough?

Now consider the same set of questions for a brick and mortar store, all questions are the same, but answers differ! In a physical store, you can ‘see’, ‘hear’ and ‘observe’’ your customers for gaining insights and taking necessary actions accordingly, but how do you  measure what happens in the world of web, when your customer visits your web-store from anywhere, anytime and from any means?

Google Business Group (GBG), Mumbai, brings you a unique opportunity to learn and interact with experts who are conducting a detailed workshop for entrepreneurs on how & what to measure in the web. We are very excited to launch our first ‘Knowledge Series’ event on August 31st at Mumbai at Harikisan Metha Foundation Institute of Journalism & Mass Communication, who are our strategic partners.

The Knowledge Series event’s focus is largely on the business side without getting too much technical, our objective is to connect, inform and inspire likeminded SMEs & entrepreneurs who want a firsthand knowledge of Google Webmasters and Analytics tools

The event comprises of 3 parts -an introduction, detailed workshop and relevant case studies followed by networking session with high tea.
